What Types of Assistance is Available?

Many times single moms have a hard time making ends meet. They struggle day after day with overwhelming money problems, which can lead to her and her family doing without certain items most people would deem necessities, like proper food and shelter.

Food for the Family

A qualified single mother may be able to enter a government-based program such as WIC (Women, Infants and Children). The WIC program is administrated by local health or social service agencies as is its more infamous cousin the “Food Stamp” or SNAP program.

A favorite “whipping boy” during political elections, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) program has long since replaced all paper coupons (food stamps) with plastic EBT cards. Still commonly called “Food Stamps” by many recipients, the SNAP has been around, in one form or another, since 1962.

SNAP provides food assistance to single mothers who are in difficult situations and can’t feed their families properly. This program has helped over 31.5 million hard-working yet low-income people just in 2008 alone.

Rent Payment Grants

Another type of assistance for single mothers is the Section 8 Voucher program is funded by HUD (US Housing and Urban Development) but is overseen by local state or county agencies.

This program basically provides a single mother, assistance with her rent. If the rental house or apartment meets all the federal safety requirements, Section 8 will pay the difference between what the family can afford and the cost of the monthly payment.
